12 Improvisations For Piano
Sebastiano Meloni composer, piano
On his second Big Round Records release MOODS AND SKETCHES, composer Sebastiano Meloni presents 12 improvisations for piano. Meloni’s primary interest is in making improvisation, both as a composer and as a performer. Performed on a Fazioli grand piano F278, each piece explores the different facets of improvisational language, each having a specific methodical theme.
Meloni’s Transparencies is an exploration of space and time, where the piano is divided into its three registers, each moving at a different pace, sometimes blurred and at other times blended into a single melodic voice. Point Particle is seemingly a string of consciousness with a pseudo-circular form. The piece opens with a dappling effect created by disjunct, evenly paced, atonal constellations, which return in part, and with greater intensity, after the work journeys through numerous contrasting ideas. Absence is the most rhythmically consistent piece on the album; a dominating gentle rhythmic groove pattern upon which the composer develops melodic ideas.
