Big Round Artist

David Harris was born and raised in Kalamazoo MI to parents who loved the arts. He began listening to his father’s record collection, falling in love with the Romantic composers at age 3. After much begging, his parents acceded to piano lessons for Harris starting in first grade. Initially, he had to walk to the college where his father taught to use their piano for practice until his parents were sure that he wasn’t going to quit lessons and leave them stuck with a piano.

Earliest musical loves also included The Beatles, The Doors, and Stevie Wonder. In his teens he discovered Monk, Mingus, Coltrane and other jazz greats, soon followed by Shorter, Jarrett, and Jobim.

David has performed in the United States and Europe with Arnett Cobb, Don Cherry, and Okay Temiz, among others. His first album of original material, The View From Morning, featured saxophonist Kirk Whalum and flutist Tony Campise.

He lives in Houston TX with his wife and two daughters.

YOU LOVED ME THEN, David Harris’ first album of originals in over 30 years, reflects his eclectic musical journey. It began when his father played him the works of Romantic composers like Chopin and Schuman, continued to his grade school encounters with the Beatles and The Doors, and was crowned by his teenage discovery of John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and most importantly, Thelonious Monk. Harris estimates that he has written somewhere around 3,000 jazz, pop, and classical compositions. With the help of renowned pianist Paul English and a cadre of exceptional jazz talents, Harris brings some of his favorites to life on this Big Round Records release.
