Parma Recordings Announces Re-Launch of Big Round Records
February 9, 2010
(Portsmouth, NH) – PARMA Recordings is pleased to announce the much-anticipated re-launch of Big Round Records.
Founded in 1986 by Paul and Peggo Hodes and acquired by PARMA Recordings in 2009, Big Round Records features a vibrant and diverse release slate with music by legends and rising stars of jazz, rock, blues, and more.
As a PARMA imprint, Big Round Records is distributed exclusively by industry leader Naxos and will be run as a joint venture between PARMA and Peggo, who will have an active hand in the label’s musical activity.
"We are proud to acquire a company with such a wonderful history and feel PARMA is uniquely situated to bring Big Round Records in new and exciting directions," says PARMA CEO Bob Lord. “Peggo is an incredibly talented musician with whom I have had the pleasure of working both inside and outside of the studio, and her artistic acumen is impeccable. Big Round has an exciting 2010 planned, and the future is a bright one for the label"
"Our goal in launching Big Round Records was a simple one – create great music for the world to hear and enjoy," says Peggo Hodes. "Bob has always been a powerful advocate for new music, and with PARMA he has achieved something special. I am delighted that Big Round is now a part of PARMA, and I look forward to continuing our collaboration for many years to come."
In its first two decades, Big Round cultivated a high-quality catalog of acoustic, folk, blues, Americana, and children's music led by Peggo, whose new standards collection "IN LOVE" is one of the label's January 2010 releases.
PARMA will expand the label's genre offering while continuing its tradition of organic, acoustic-based music. 2010 releases include products by Allen Savedoff, Mika Yoshida, Melanie Mitrano, Sebastiano Meloni, and Andy Jaffe, featuring artists such as renowned percussionist Steve Gadd (Eric Clapton, Paul Simon), beloved troubadour Raffi, free jazz innovator Tony Oxley (Cecil Taylor, John McLaughlin), and trumpet ace Lee Thornburg (Tower of Power, Supertramp).

BIG ROUND RECORDS RELAUNCHES WITH 4 NEW RELEASES
January 28, 2010
The much anticipated re-launch of Big Round Records is finally here, with four all new releases!
Allen Savedoff’s Standing on Chairs is an eclectic collection of rock, jazz, and blues (both standards and originals) all played on the bassoon. Joining Savedoff is producer Kim Scharnberg, who wrote the smattering of impressive originals on the disc, and some of the finest session musicians in LA whose credits range from Frank Zappa to Tower of Power.
Peggo Hodes’ Peggo In Love is a striking collection of timeless love songs picked from the Great American Songbook. On the singer’s debut solo recording, Hodes’ affinity for the material is palpable throughout, from the mournful When I Fall In Love to the sultry La Vie en Rose. Peggo is accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Kent Allyn, guitarists Paul Hodes and David Tonkin, saxophonist Matt Langley, and percussionist John Faggiano.
Melanie Mitrano shines on her Big Round Records debut All Things Gold. A lifetime of working closely with renowned living classical composers catalyzed her own journey into composition. Now, with All Things Gold, Melanie has surrounded herself with an assortment of the best New York jazz musicians around. With an emphasis on story-telling, her engaging lyrics draw audiences in, while her stellar band provides the solid and rhythmic grid she spins her tales upon. Whether it’s good old-fashioned swing, a bossa, rhumba, pop ballad, or a gritty tune in an unusual meter, Mitrano uses whatever is takes to get her point across, and she does it with skill and style. These intensely varied and deftly executed songs are bold new additions to the American Songbook.
Pianist Sebastiano Meloni, bassist Adrianno Orru and drummer Tony Oxley reach a higher level of musical exploration through free improvisation. Oxley, known for his work with John McLaughlin, Cecil Taylor, and Anthony Broaxton shines on this world premiere release. Perfect for late nights and low lights.
All four releases are available now through (http://www.naxosdirect.com/Big-Round-Records/label/BRR/) Naxos Direct .
